Student Leadership
Student leadership is a valued area at BHPS. As demonstrated below we have a wide and varied program that promotes many opportunities for children to "learn" how to lead. We aim to develop an awareness and understanding of what makes an effective leader by teaching explicit skills and encouraging students to be involved in the leadership roles offered throughout the school. Our focus is on developing students’ individual leadership abilities and confidence with public speaking skills. Our leadership roles allow students to be involved in a variety of areas across the school from fundraising for organisations, organizing school sporting events, encouraging cross age teamwork and developing an area of expertise. As leaders of the school we know if we all work together Briar Hill will continue to be a strong and cohesive community.
Leadership in Action involves all students at Briar Hill PS. Our teachers strive to foster confidence in our students and celebrate our student’s leadership through positive actions. You can find leaders in every classroom at BHPS, as we recognise that no matter how small, each student can make a BIG difference.
Junior School Council (JSC)
The student representatives at Briar Hill PS are elected democratically by their peers and demonstrate the Kindness Values in their community involvement.
JSC representatives meet fortnightly to discuss student lead initiatives, community events and school decisions. They are lead by our Class 6 school captains.
JSC students from across the school run events, share their achievements at assembly regularly and demonstrate leadership in action at BHPS.
School Captains
Our Class 6 school captains are elected by their peers to lead our school in a variety of ways. BHPS captains demonstrate our kindness values, confidence in public speaking, organisational skills and a community mindedness through leadership in action. Their role includes:
Running JSC meetings
Presenting at community events, including the Montmorency/Greensborough RSL Memorial Service and ANZAC day service
Actioning student lead initiatives throughout our school, including inclusive programs, fundraising events and art displays
Leadership Program
In class 5 and 6, students take part in a formal leadership program, run by our teachers. Students are elected into roles that include Environment Captain, Art Captain, Kindness Captain and of course our House Captains who lead community sports events such as the Swimming Carnival and Athletics Day.
Each student’s unique strengths are celebrated at BHPS as an opportunity for leadership. Celebrating individuality through leadership in action and championing student voice is a strength our students impress us with every day.
