Steiner Singing Specialist

Briar Hill Primary School has a vibrant music program within the Steiner Influenced curriculum. The program has a component based on daily classroom singing and recorder work. The school also offers an extra curricular comprehensive strings program which begins in the latter half of Class 3 through to the end of Class 6 where Individual instrumental music tuition is encouraged and supported.  There are class and mixed age ensembles from Class 4 onwards.

The applicant for the Steiner Influenced Singing Program will need a strong background in selecting, delivering and leading music with and without the assistance of recorded music. Any skills in singing and playing an instrument (preferably recorder) will be an asset. Any former knowledge and/or experience of teaching singing in Waldorf/Steiner schools will be preferable. A very strong commitment to working collaboratively will be essential.

This position is a contracted position to complement and support the classes, choirs and ensembles.
The singing contractor would deliver singing lessons for 25 minutes per week in each class on 1 day, starting at 11.30am and finishing at 3.30pm. They will be paid for 4 hours work. The rate of pay per hour would be dependent on relevant knowledge, expertise, qualifications and experience. The program will be delivered 9 days per term. This would allow for a week off each term for excursions, public holidays etc.

DUTIES

The singing contractor will be responsible for teaching songs, rhymes and verses that support a Steiner Influenced Curriculum.  An overview of the whole Waldorf curriculum is eventually necessary, so the teacher can see the complete picture and how Music is integrated into the school program.
The singing contractor will work in all 7 classrooms from Prep to Class 6 supported by the classroom teacher.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS, UNDERSTANDINGS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Teaching year levels Prep to 6 Songs Rhymes and Verses.     
  • Confidence to lead with singing as the main teaching tool
  • Playing and reading descant recorder music
  • good vocal ability
  • proven ability to work collaboratively
  • open-ness to a Steiner approach to music education
  • excellent communication skills with both children and adults
  • a passion for music education
  • effective behaviour management skills

  • WWCC
  • VIT current registration preferred but not a necessity
